New Name, New Season

What’s in a name? A simple question with an answer that is anything but. As we looked toward this upcoming season, we asked ourselves this same question. Through our planning to engage with an even broader audience, we realized that our name needed to convey that same spirit. With that in mind, The St. John’s Artist Series will become The Artist Series at St. John’s. This subtle change states that we are not only for St. John’s United Church of Christ but are for the entire community, all while honoring the historic role St. John’s has held in The Artist Series. Without the over 35 years of support from St. John’s, The Artist Series would not exist. Our new name acknowledges our roots and uses them to grow confidently into the future! With a strong foundation and an exciting future ahead, we are thrilled to present the 2024-2025 season.

  • David Furniss, Founder

Founded in 1988 by then Minister of Music David Furniss, The Artist Series at St. John's has become the musical backdrop for the North Penn Valley and beyond. Each season presents a variety of concerts that are free of charge featuring locally, nationally, and internationally known artists. Past performances have featured John Pennington, Les Canards Chantants, Brian Ming Chu, Svyati Duo, the Seipp/Sheets Trumpet and Organ Duo, and Latitude 39.

  • The Schultz Memorial Organ

The Schultz Memorial Organ, refurbished and rededicated in 2017, holds a prominent place each season. A thrilling concert by Nathan Laube was held to welcome the instrument to St. John’s United Church of Christ and The Artist Series at St. John's. Look for and listen for the organ’s presence each and every season! You can read more about the Schultz Memorial Organ, it’s inaugural concert, and more in this article from The Reporter.

  • The Artist Series Chorus

Twice each season, concerts include The Artist Series Chorus. Comprised of current and past St. John’s choir members, along with members of the congregation and community, this ensemble presents major choral works, both familiar and new, such as Donald McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata, Alice Parker’s Melodious Accord, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Michael John Trotta’s Seven Last Words, Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living, and Elaine Hagenberg's Illuminare. • Giving Back

While concerts and celebrations are important aspects of what The Artist Series at St. John’s provides, there is a third that is paramount: giving back to the community in a tangible way. This season, we will be providing a scholarship to a graduating North Penn High School senior with plans to study music. The Artist Series at St. John’s is not only invested in the past and present but is also invested in the future. Be on the lookout for more information about this exciting new initiative.
